Thank you all for your support to get to this place. So stoked!!!
Lance kindly let me share his graphs from his review here and thought it would be useful to capture it.
Go straight to minute 10:41 if you are short on time.
Background: Lance's video of tireless tasting 30 espressos explores how espresso basket size affects extraction and taste by testing four sizes (36mm, 46mm, 49mm, and 58mm) with A: constant bed depth and B: constant dose. It includes blind tastings and data analysis on extraction yield, grind size, and flavor profiles.
Summary: The GRAPH 46 gave highest scores for Body/ Clarity/ Overall!!! As he mentioned and I mentioned in my original Kickstarter video (CayCay), the 46mm is not necessarily the best basket. No basket is the best. The joy is that one can experiment with different puck depths, which result in different taste profiles. Overall the GRAPH 46 gives a juicy, full bodied and clear shot.
Here are the key findings from the video:
Basket size impacts grind size and extraction yield: 58mm diameter baskets required finer grinds, while narrower diameter baskets needed coarser grinds all things being equal like dose, pressure and shot time.
Taste differences were noticeable: Blind tastings showed smaller diameter baskets tended to produce more intense, concentrated flavors, whereas larger diameter baskets gave a cleaner, lighter taste.
Liberate the 58: Choosing basket size can be a tool for flavor tuning—smaller DIA for bold, syrupy shots, larger DIA for clarity and balance.
